Digital accessibility: why it should be part of every product

Digital accessibility means creating websites, apps and systems that can be used by people with different abilities and ways of interacting.

It benefits people with visual, hearing, motor, cognitive and neurological disabilities, but it also helps users in temporary or situational contexts, such as using a phone in bright sunlight, navigating with only a keyboard, or watching a video without sound.

The W3C explains that the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, known as WCAG, provide recommendations for making digital content more accessible.

The four principles of accessibility

WCAG organizes its criteria around four fundamental principles.

Perceivable

Information needs to be presented in ways users can perceive.

This includes:

  • alternative text for images
  • captions for videos
  • adequate contrast
  • content that doesn’t rely on color alone
  • the ability to enlarge text

Operable

All controls need to be usable.

  • buttons with adequate size
  • enough time to complete tasks
  • no animations that could cause discomfort
  • accessible menus and modals

Understandable

The interface and content must be clear.

This involves:

  • objective language
  • consistent navigation
  • visible labels
  • understandable error messages
  • instructions placed near fields
  • predictable component behavior

Robust

Content needs to work reliably across different browsers and assistive technologies.

Correct semantic structure makes it easier for screen readers and other tools to interpret content.

What changed with WCAG 2.2

WCAG 2.2 added new criteria compared to version 2.1, especially in areas related to focus, authentication, interaction and target size.

These improvements reinforce the need to think about accessibility during the project, rather than trying to fix it only at the end.

Accessibility starts at discovery

This work doesn’t belong to development alone.

During discovery and design, the team should consider:

  • the diversity of users
  • devices used
  • context of access
  • temporary and permanent limitations
  • assistive technologies
  • the most important tasks
  • possible barriers in the journey

Designers can assess hierarchy, contrast, readability and component behavior. Developers can ensure semantics, keyboard navigation and compatibility. Content professionals can improve instructions, labels and messages.

Automated testing is not enough

Automated tools help find problems, but they don’t identify every barrier.

A more complete assessment combines:

  • automated tools
  • manual keyboard navigation
  • screen reader testing
  • contrast review
  • interface zoom
  • form evaluation
  • user testing
